My Motivational Playlist

Motivational Playlist

When it comes to my writing, or any other aspect of my life I enjoy and/or feel is important, I will occassionally have wobbles. It doesn't matter what feedback I get or the support I have, sometimes self-doubt and fear creeps in and stops me from moving forward. Stops me from writing the post or doing the thing that scares me. It can be difficult to get yourself out of those ruts, but I've found a number of songs that will give me a kick up the bum, reignight my passion, and get me moving. I thought I would share some of them with you today.

These songs tend to mean something different to me than they necessarily were meant to. Whether it be the whole song, or just certain lyrics, it's my own interpretation of these words, and how they speak to me, that inspire and motivate me.

Brave by Sara Bareilles

Say what you wanna say,
And let the words fall out,
Honestly, I wanna see you be brave
When it comes to my writing, this is pretty much my theme song. I believe the song was originally written about speaking up against bullying, and it's extremely powerful. But for me, it's about speaking up full stop. I'm passionate about certain topics, and I have a voice, I have opinions, and I should use them. Some of the things I write about are very close to home and can be difficult to share. Sometimes I worry about what other people will think of me because of or how they will react to something I write. But Brave gives me the strength to put fingers to keys.

Let your words be anything but empty
Why don't you tell them the truth?
Nothing Ever Happens by Rachel Platten

Nothing ever happens if you stay in your room
Nothing ever happens if you leave the party too soon
Never be a winner if you're not in the game
And nothing ever happens if you always play it safe
Make a little space and get out of your own way.
I think this song is pretty much self-explanatory. Nothing will happen unless you go out and do it. I can sit here with my self-doubt and my fear, but nothing will change. If I don't want to go stagnant, I need to move, and sometimes that can take a little bit of courage. This song helps me find that courage.

She sees the sunlight through the cracks
It's only her who holds her back
And so she takes her deepest breath
Shuts the door and walks down the steps
Girl On Fire by Alicia Keys

Looks like a girl, but she's a flame
So bright, she can burn your eyes
Better look the other way
You can try but you'll never forget her name
She's on top of the world
Hottest of the hottest girls
This song does wonders for me when I'm feeling like I'm not good enough, when I compare myself to others and find myself lacking, when I feel like I have nothing new to say and no-one wants to listen anyway. This song then reminds me just how wonderful I am. It might sound arrogant, but it's not; this stops me comparing myself to others, and just see myself on my own, as an individual, and remember that I'm actually pretty awesome, and I am worthy of being here, of being me, and of using my voice.

But she gon' let it burn, baby, burn, baby
This girl is on fire
It's My Life by Bon Jovi

It's my life
And it's now or never
See, I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
Again, self-explanatory. Life is short, there is only now, and I need to make most of life while I can, without letting fear hold me back. But this song says so much about being brave and not hiding away, it really motivates me.

Better stand tall when they're calling you out
Don't bend, don't break, baby, don't back down
Try by P!nk

Just because it burns
Doesn't mean you're gonna die
You've gotta get up and try, try, try
Although this is a song about a break up and moving on from it, these particular words speak to me about life in general. Sometimes things don't work out the way I'd hope, in all different areas of life. But giving up isn't an option.

Be the Girl by Aslyn

Cause I'm not here to be around
And be that girl that you forget about
This song is about making sure a guy doesn't write her off as just another girl. For me, those lines are about being heard. Being seen and heard. But that's not going to happen if I don't put myself out ther to be seen and heard. I've got to speak if I'm going to be heard.

Look at Me Now by The Faders

You said I had it all so wrong
That I could never be someone
You said that I was just a little girl who doesn't know
You always shut me up, put me down
Bet you're feeling stupid now
My life's moving on and you're still waiting
It's funny how the story's turned around
Look at me now
I couldn't find this song on Spotify, unfortunately, and there aren't any good videos on YouTube (this is probably the best), but if you can find it somewhere, do give it a list. It's about how far a girl has come after leaving a controlling relationship. For me, it reminds me of the people at school who bullied me. It's not about me thinking I'm better than them, but how I'm not the same girl I once was, and how far I've come. It spurs me on to keep on going, to keep doing what I love.

What songs keep you motivated? What would you add to this list?
